Shiitake Mushroom

Indian Summer

January passed, as the cold and foggy mornings continued to blur the visibility of streets and kept the environment cold until sunrise.

At the end of February, the wind that blew with the sweet scent of fog and dew started to replace with humidity and sweat. The cold and damp walls opened their arms to bright sunlight and heat. There were colourful kites on a clear blue sky with cotton candy-like clouds scattered around.

Children took over the streets, running and playing as their summer holidays started. Tender coconut, palm fruit, and mangoes were sold everywhere. Buttermilk became the predominant drink at home.

I started to enjoy the summer being home. Those dark memories that haunted me during the winter were replaced with childhood memories of my summer holidays. Drenched in sweat, I danced with my sister to our favourite music. As we ate our food together, we watched movies.

Fear that surrounded me vanished as sunlight passed through my window.
